About Me

Experience Summary

Greetings one and all! My name is Tristan, and I am a recent graduate of the University of Florida's College of Engineering as of August 2012. I graduated with a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Nuclear Engineering and a cumulative GPA of 3.25 (and I will tell you that I earned every point of it). I am looking forward to using my knowledge and proficiency in various fields of math and science to make your four year slog through the rigors of academia as palpable as possible. I offer flexible hours, friendly demeanor, and a patient approach to tutoring that caters to your individual skill set. All of this comes at a reasonable price, which can of course be negotiated to suit your budget (remember, I was once a broke college student too). In short: I work with you, for you, and on your terms! I offer tutelage in many technical disciplines: Math, Science, and Engineering are my bread and butter. I have studied in these fields, and have useable, real-world training in them. Furthermore, I enjoy teaching; passing on my knowledge to the next generation of college students is one of my greatest passions in life! Therefore, I will approach the teaching of you or your student with enthusiasm, and care to ensure that the lessons are not just suitable to get you past the next exam, but remain in your scholastic tool box for a long and successful career.

Subject Commentary

ACT Proficiency: I know the basics
I would like to post the disclaimer that I have not taken the ACT myself - I'm an SAT child! However, in high school I did study extensively for both exams, and retain much of my knowledge about how this exam works. In tutoring for the ACT, I offer strategies for optimizing time management on the exam, and getting the most out of the questions posed. One need not be a certified genius in order to pass this section, and I will show you how to do it!
Algebra Proficiency: Expert
Algebra 1 and 2 are both cut from the same cloth. Systems of equations, expression simplification, and knowing how to manipulate groups of mathematical operations: These are all the meat and potatoes of what algebra tests for. Algebra lays the foundation for all of higher math, and is one of the most important subjects you can learn. As such, I do not take this subject lightly, and I will teach you the methods needed to perform algebraic operations as quickly as possible.
Algebra I Proficiency: Expert

ASVAB Proficiency: Experienced
I almost joined the military after college. I was in the Navy ROTC program for four years, and then decided at the last minute that I wanted to be an engineer in the private sector. However, before I realized that the ASVAB was not required to go into the ROTC program, I took it. I received a 98/100 score, which would have qualified me for any job I would have possibly wanted in the military. As far as the subject matter goes, the ASVAB is hardly any more difficult than the ACT or SAT. In fact, I would argue that it's a great deal easier. However, for those not knowing what to expect it can be intimidating, which is why most people make their mistakes on it. My goal is to help minimize the amount of mistakes that you (or your student) are prone to make on the ASVAB by instilling a familiarity for the subject matter, and helping the student get the best score possible!
Calculus I This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
Calculus is the subject that introduced me to tutoring on all levels. It is by far the subject that most students struggle with, and is often used by Universities to "weed out" students who do not have an aptitude in it. Fortunately, I can tell you that with a tutor who has an ingrained familiarity with the subject (me), Calculus is easily taught and readily learned. Learning this subject will provide a solid foundation for almost every technical course that these Universities offer.
Calculus II Proficiency: Expert

Chemistry This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
Along with Calculus and Physics, Chemistry provides a challenge for most college students, and is usually the largest hurdle that University freshmen face. As a nuclear engineer, I was not required to study in Chemistry II, which governs bio-chemistry, and so if you are seeking specific tutelage in that area I am probably not the best to teach. However, for the principals of Chemistry, which are widely applied to the other sciences, I will be able to effectively train you in how to use dimensional analysis, chemical equation balancing, and breaking down the problems in order to give you the most comprehensive toolbox possible to solve the more advanced problems. Covalent bonds, chemical half-lives, aqueous solutions, and acid-base titration are just a few examples of what I can teach you in this subject.
Civil Engineering Proficiency: I know the basics
I spent four years at the University of Florida studying Nuclear Engineering - a primary component of which is power generation, which has applications and requires training in the Civil Engineering sector. As such, I have received training in Civil Engineering, and following my graduation spent four months as an intern for a Civil Engineering company. Many of the subjects applicable to Civil Engineering are statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, and so on. These are core courses for Nuclear Engineering students to complete, and I have done so. Ergo, my degree should speak for itself insofar as my qualifications are concerned.
Geometry Proficiency: Expert
As a sophomore in high school, I doubled up my math credits so as to take both Geometry and Algebra II at the same time. This was when I truly gained an appreciation for mathematics and the beauty therein. Geometry is a very intriguing field, and sparked my personal interest in mathematics. For that reason, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Geometry. Sentimentality aside, Geometry is a highly applicable field in both technical and non-technical areas. Much of the art of aesthetics hinges on geometric design and understanding the principals of proportion and congruency. From a technical standpoint, geometry unlocks the means by which students can visualize, conceptualize, and ultimately understand even the most complex and daunting of math problems. The understanding of geometry is fundamental in understanding much of the math that comes afterwards.
GRE Proficiency: Experienced
Just before graduating college, I heard about the Graduate Record Examination. The GRE is essentially a large-scale SAT that takes a more comprehensive look at the student's understanding of math and language. In short, is the academic "follow up" exam to the SAT. I studied hard for the GRE, and had help from a tutor who showed me (more than anything else) what to expect. I barely studied the material that would be on the exam, and instead focused on the strategies that helped me maximize my time and minimize incorrect answers. However, both facets of this exam are important to practice in, and as such I offer my expertise on the matter. On my first attempt at the exam, I scored well within the top quartile of all test-takers nationwide.
Mechanical Engineering Proficiency: I know the basics
As I've mentioned in my description of my Civil Engineering expertise: I spent four years at the University of Florida studying Nuclear Engineering. It is very important for nuclear engineers to understand the mechanics of the materials and structures they use. As such, the same traits that make me an effective tutor in the field of Civil Engineering also make me well suited to teach Mechanical, which by-and-large encompasses the most populous and general of all the engineering disciplines. Many of the subjects applicable to Mechanical Engineering are statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, and so on. These are core courses for Nuclear Engineering students to complete, and I have done so.
Physics This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
Physics is right up there with Chemistry and Calculus as one of the most challenging courses that college students face as they enter their freshmen year. However, this subject has perhaps the greatest reward associated with success: Learning physics is the technical equivalent of learning to speak Latin. Although it is rare to find a career that deals with physics in its purest, and most direct form, physics is the language which informs all sciences. Every technical subject that has ever been taught in any school is directly linked to physics - it either informs physical principals (i.e. Calculus) or can be derived from them (i.e. Chemistry). Therefore, I take great pride in my knowledge of Physics, and spare no effort to ensure that you (or your student) understand the principals therein... It is that important of a subject!
Pre-Algebra Proficiency: Expert
For young students learning advanced math for the first time, pre-algebra is something of a shock to the system. Its study is somewhat akin to jumping into a swimming pool without first testing the waters, and discovering it to be as cold as ice! At least, this was my experience when I first studied pre-algebra. Still, the excitement that comes from undertaking those first big steps into the field of mathematics is palpable. When studying pre-algebra, sometimes the hardest part is relaxing your mind and learning the new principals. I was fortunate enough that I had a tutor to help me in the process! I appreciate the chance to return the favor.
Pre-Calculus Proficiency: Expert
Pre-calculus is like pre-algebra in that it is a course where many new principles are bombarding the student, and at times it can seem overwhelming. Succeeding at this subject, however, is essential to ensuring a continued success in the fields of Calculus and Differential Equations. Fortunately, this is where I come in!
SAT - Math Proficiency: Experienced
Having scored a 1370 on the SAT after three attempts, I can safely say that I wish I knew then what I know now about taking the SAT. Moreso than any other exam, the SAT can be approached with a very methodical strategy that will maximize the student's time and minimize the number of points lost. As far as the contents of the exam go, they are not much more difficult than the typical FCAT. Many students simply freeze or forget important information when faced with the stresses that a big, important exam like the SAT has in store. With the proper tutelage, however, a student will be well prepared to receive this exam and succeed!

Trigonometry Proficiency: Expert
Although Trigonometry is no longer taught as its own subject, learning it is very important. Trigonometry is everywhere, and I mean everywhere... Every technical field has facets of it, and without this important foundation, the student may find it hard to keep up. Fortunately, I am more than qualified to teach this subject. Having written my own guide on the matter, I am very familiar with trigonometry and know exactly how to approach teaching it to students at both the high school and college levels.
