I have always been a curious person and even as an adult I enjoy learning. As a result, I have a passion for sharing my knowledge and experience with others. As a teacher, I am encouraging, supportive, and patient. I think it is very important to tailor teaching methods to the individual student because people learn in different ways. I don't believe in one-size-fits-all education, and I like to use my creativity in lessons to help keep learning interesting. I earned my BA in German with a minor in music. My interest in the German language began as a child when my mother took a military assignment to Germany. In addition to the three years I lived there with my family, I completed a study abroad session during college and returned two years later as a Fulbright grantee to teach English in a German school. In total I spent six years in Germany and am quite fluent in the language.

I love teaching children. I enjoy getting to know how each child thinks and works, and finding the best way to teach them in a way that is meaningful and gratifying. My approach is usually very methodical, and I believe a strong foundation allows for a deep and thorough understanding of the subject at hand. I consider my working relationship with my students to be a team effort, one that requires their input and communication as well as my own. It is very gratifying for me to help my students begin to realize their own potential, and to help them learn to cultivate that in a way that reaches far beyond any one subject. As a young musician, I began playing violin at the age of 9 and at the age of 14, I began learning piano. By age 15 I toured Austria and Germany with my high school orchestra and by age 16 I had composed my first symphony entitled Seven Emotions. At age 17, I performed at Carnegie Hall and went on to tour in Italy, again on invitational with my high school orchestra. In addition to this, I have a 1.5 years experience as a private music instructor as well as a BS in Music Business and Recording Arts. I have always loved teaching children the skills to become a musician. Playing music can inspire children to be creative and expressive. I have been involved with youth since completing Bible College in 1978. I have two grown children who both completed college (my daughter cum laud in chem; University of Kentucky). I also have two step children; ages 12 and 10. I have been a qualified substitute teacher for the last 4 years, so have a working knowledge of state standards for all subjects; especially math.
