Changing The World, One Child AT A Time

I was an assistant teacher to a 3rd grade class at Wilson's Mills Elementary from 2001 until 2003. My duties included assisted the teacher and helping the students in a manner to help them learn at their pace. And I also have an 8 year old son who attends River Dell Elementary. I help him on a daily basis with his homework, which includes math, reading and writing. I love kids and it brings great joy to my life to see the smile on their faces when they learn something new, or figure out the answer to a problem they are working on.

I began 'teaching' as the head wakeboarding instructor at Coble Ski School in Lillington, NC, when I was a junior in high school. Shortly thereafter I took a position working at a beach resort in Pensacola, FL, where I spent an entire summer instructing surfing, kayaking and sailing. At Duke I tutored during each of my four years, either biweekly at a local Durham elementary school or at the Emily K Family Life Center. I loved teaching since my first teaching experience in 1974 that iinvolved working as a long-term substitute at the Omega School in Madison, Wisconsin. The Omega School, an alternative hiigh school that occupied a few rooms in an an old office buiilding, helped high risk students who couldn't fit into a regular high school environment obtain their GED. Some students were gifted but unable to adjust to the regimens of regular high school. Others stole cars or acted out in other ways. For my first experience in teaching, I worked with both high school and elementary school students who were learning disabled and in need of help. I used the Orton-Gillingham method for dyslexia and found that it really seemed to work well to suit the student’s needs. From there I went on to work two years in resource rooms working with middle school and high school students in a one-on-one and group setting for intense tutoring.
