Changing The World, One Child AT A Time

I was an assistant teacher to a 3rd grade class at Wilson's Mills Elementary from 2001 until 2003. My duties included assisted the teacher and helping the students in a manner to help them learn at their pace. And I also have an 8 year old son who attends River Dell Elementary. I help him on a daily basis with his homework, which includes math, reading and writing. I love kids and it brings great joy to my life to see the smile on their faces when they learn something new, or figure out the answer to a problem they are working on.

More About This Tutor...

I enjoy working with children of all age ranges, and it is my personal goal to make learning a difficult subject less of a chore. I believe that having extra help can make a world of difference in academic success and increase the overall confidence and attitude in a child, as I am very aware myself, having had math tutors when I was in high school. My ambition as a tutor is to give your child the same enjoyment that I experienced in learning Chemistry and English. I am patient and dedicated and I strive for excellence—in my tutoring style I am open and willing to use different approaches to teach if needed. I ask questions and also try to tutor with a similar style to the student's teacher, which can be a critical tool during test taking.
Being a student at UNC Chapel Hill has challenged and inspired me to think creatively and achieve excellence in all areas of academia. As a seni ... read more

I am a patient and empathetic tutor. I have come to realize that there is sometimes a correlation between students having problems in school, and having problems elsewhere. Sometimes they feel the need to discuss these things. I think it's important to listen, but on the other hand, not let that take up a great deal of time. I am able to redirect and focus the students' attention, and to explain things in different ways, if they don't understand the first time.
I graduated from San Diego State University, with a B.A. in Social Sciences and a Biology minor (Animal Behavior), in 1995. Previously, I had served four years in the U.S. Navy from 1982-1986. During 2001-2003, I worked for Salem-Keizer School District in Oregon as a Special Programs Instructional Assistant. I worked primarily with an autistic child, but also assisted the other students in math and reading. I have ex ... read more

More About This Tutor...

For my first experience in teaching, I worked with both high school and elementary school students who were learning disabled and in need of help. I used the Orton-Gillingham method for dyslexia and found that it really seemed to work well to suit the student’s needs. From there I went on to work two years in resource rooms working with middle school and high school students in a one-on-one and group setting for intense tutoring. I am now working as an elementary school teacher and I miss being able to focus on giving my full attention to students one-on-one.
My teaching style is adapted to meet the student’s needs. I firmly believe that each child learns differently. I think students either learn kinesthetically, visually, or auditorally, for the most part. I think it is my job as a teacher to find out which style best suits the student and adapt my style accordingly. I also think ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

For over twenty years I have taught at the college level, with extensive expertise in teaching the liberal arts to engineering majors. Much of my work is directed towards teaching research, writing, editing, and analytical skills. I have expertise in writing, editing, research, and most importantly, synthesizing information. While in college, I tutored for three years at a home for 'wayward' boys. My own daughter had some learning disabilities (auditory dyslexia) and though I would not take full credit for this, she is now a successfull first year college student (with a 3.75 average her first semester) and an avid reader. I feel strongest about my skills in teaching students who 'hate' school; writing; alternative ways of looking at math problems.
I assume even the 'worst' student wishes to learn, has the means to do so, and will direct me in how to help him or her di ... read more

While obtaining my Master's degree in Accounting, I worked as a Professor's Assistant which involved substitute teaching, research, and grading exams and homework. I have a natural ability in working with young people as well as exceptional communication, organization, presentation and people skills. I have also volunteered as a mentor through IBM's Mentor Place program in the past and currently with Wake County Public Schools.
I am very passionate about teaching and working with young people. I believe that creativity, patience, and excellent communication are vital to finding ways to help students learn and understand what they are learning. A Little Bit About Me...

Coming from the influence of a family of educators, I realized early on my affinity towards teaching. In addition to my college degrees, I have been very involved in the 'summer camp' experience. Over six summers, I worked with two summer camps to teach various physical and academic curricula to grade groups K-5, 6-8, 9-12. In graduate school, I was given the opportunity to spearhead a class of undergraduates, splitting lecture time with the professor. I am currently writing my thesis (under review of faculty) to be published on the "Architectural History of NC State University and the Areas Surrounding" it. During my time in university, I have tutored students in chemistry, astronomy, English, grammar, Spanish, math, history and several other general education elements.
I believe that information accessibility should be emphasized and placed in bold. I would consider my style pers ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a published writer, experienced editor, children's camp counselor and mom, I welcome the opportunity to -- once again -- share my skills. After being sought out as a trusted source for my expertise by professional copywriters as well as family and friends, I look forward to helping students of all ages. When not writing or editing, I am also a classically trained pianist. I've played for hundreds of shows, singers and dancers, including camps, schools, and the North Carolina Theatre.
I take pride in my own writing style as well as my patience and a sense of humor. All enable me to empathize and better understand the needs of the individual seeking my help.

I believe it is vital to approach each child with an open mind concerning their learning style, pace, and interest in various subjects. I use tools such as movement, song, rhythm, and sounds to open up a different path to understanding subjects like math, science, grammar, and many others. I believe giving children a bodily experience to relate to their academic learning allows for much more growth and it reduces frustration with themsleves when they don't understand lessons only taught through lecture or writing.
I have a heavily arts-based education and teaching background. I taught for a year in an inner-city school teaching creative movement and dance technique. I have artist teacher training from the Lincoln Center Institute for Arts in Education and have been in-residence at several schools working with children by using the arts as the window to learn their academic curr ... read more

As a current tutor for Kaplan, I am involved with teaching future dentists how to prepare for the Dental Admission Test (DAT). Teaching prospective dental school applicants how to master this standardized test involves teaching not only test taking strategies, but also the mastery of large volumes of information. The DAT tests knowledge in the following areas: biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, reading comprehension, and mathematics. Apart from a sound base of knowledge in the sciences, I am also skilled in writing and grammar. I have either personally, or on behalf of others, researched, written, edited, and reviewed papers from a wide variety of academic disciplines ranging from Art History papers to Chemistry Lab reports. A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and showing people how easy accounting can be and how much it helps you in real life situations. Most students get overwhelmed easily with double entry accrual accounting. I find it best to relate the material directly to the students personal life purchase and income habits. This way they can have a hands on approach and hopefully find the rules easy and helpful in daily financial situations.
As a staff accountant for a large, global corporation (sales revenue approx. $250 million/yr) I have very much experience in all areas of finance and accounting. I specialize in journal entry writing and reconciliations. I reconcile both bank account statements and account balances with my master bank reconciliation having approximately $40 million debits and credits monthly.
