Changing The World, One Child AT A Time

I was an assistant teacher to a 3rd grade class at Wilson's Mills Elementary from 2001 until 2003. My duties included assisted the teacher and helping the students in a manner to help them learn at their pace. And I also have an 8 year old son who attends River Dell Elementary. I help him on a daily basis with his homework, which includes math, reading and writing. I love kids and it brings great joy to my life to see the smile on their faces when they learn something new, or figure out the answer to a problem they are working on.

I believe that all children can learn and all children are capable of learning. But, all students learn differently, so, I feel that by changing lessons and incorporating different things into each one to accomodate most, or all, students is necessary. When children are able to learn and gain experiences on their own, with little or no teacher intervention, they learn at their best. By doing fun activities, children are able to gain and retain knowledge better. As the child of a school system administrative professional, I have always spent extra time in the school environment. As a high school freshman I began to tutor elementary school students based on the needs highlighted by their teachers. I spent a lot of time working one on one with English as a secound language students. I assisted with their writting, reading, and basic math skills. I loved teaching since my first teaching experience in 1974 that iinvolved working as a long-term substitute at the Omega School in Madison, Wisconsin. The Omega School, an alternative hiigh school that occupied a few rooms in an an old office buiilding, helped high risk students who couldn't fit into a regular high school environment obtain their GED. Some students were gifted but unable to adjust to the regimens of regular high school. Others stole cars or acted out in other ways. My next teachiing experience was in 1975 as a teaching assistant at the University of California, Irvine. T.A.'s taught their own classes and were responsible for lectures, grading, assignments.
