I worked for two years at the Cleveland State University Writing Center where I tutored writing and reading comprehension to undergraduate and graduate students of many academic backgrounds. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people.
