Experience Summary
I earned a 98% in my College Algebra course this past fall so I am here to lend a hand to those who could use it. My focus in college was Communication with a minor in Philosophy. I also studied international relations for 6 months in Europe, earned a certificate in graphic and web design in San Francisco, and I am currently studying medical imaging here in Cleveland. I also have a great deal of experience as a singer and guitar player, which is where the bulk of my teaching experience comes from. I have taught music to dozens of people of all ages over the past 7 years.
Teaching Style
I believe that comparing complex concepts to everyday, personal objects and situations is the most effective way to learn. Therefore, I am big on metaphors. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people. I am also an advocate of learning by example; I will walk through a problem or two, step by step, until the process becomes obvious. From there, equations can become identifiable patterns that essentially require you to simply "fill in the blanks".
