Tutor - Writing, Reading, GED Prep

I worked for two years at the Cleveland State University Writing Center where I tutored writing and reading comprehension to undergraduate and graduate students of many academic backgrounds. I tutored students one-on-one and also taught writing workshops to groups of 3-6 students. In February of 2013, I began tutoring GED prep at Seeds of Literacy, an adult education organization in Cleveland. I am comfortable tutoring most topics covered on the test. If there is a topic I am unsure about, I will let you know up front. I am also certified to be a foster parent and subsequently possess well-rounded knowledge concerning the learning needs of children and young adults of varying abilities and learning styles.

Set Realistic Goals and Rewards Create realistic, individual goals for all of your students. It's nice to have a classroom goal so students feel like they are working together, encouraging one another. However, it's more important to give each student an attainable goal that's personalized for their educational needs, such as completing homework assignments on time or checking over an assignment before they turn it in. My comments on tutoring Poetry : In poetry, my knowledge is more towards the technical rather than aesthetic aspect.

I employ the Socratic method of asking lots and lots of questions. I see a tutorial as not a time for a student to soak up information, but to engage the mind and use the tools he has already been given. Of course, if a student truly doesn't know something crucial, I will tell him. I always try to make my instruction at least a little bit funny, and to connect the material to the student's interests, because these factors are known to enhance learning.
I have five years' experience as a writing tutor at my university, during which I wrote and presented papers at multiple regional conferences for university writing tutors. I rose to become one of the most respected and requested tutors out of my peers. I many credit hours of pedagogy and teaching methodology classes, both for Teaching ESL and Latin, and a semester of student teaching under my belt.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that comparing complex concepts to everyday, personal objects and situations is the most effective way to learn. Therefore, I am big on metaphors. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people.
