I love to be an encourager and to build children up in their educational experiences. I believe in small portions, using this as a learning tool. To tackle tough learning experiences we take one piece at a time and keep the end in site. I love to help children celebrate their successes big and little. I believe that: children need positive role models to build their confidences while helping them succeed not only in school but also in life. :) I would love to have the opportunity to share my skills.

At the outset of the personal computer revolution I sold and supported Tandy computers. As part of the support function I instructed clients in the use of their computers. A whole new world blossomed for me. Teaching clients to use their computers turned out to be a long term and very rewarding experience. During my thirteen years as The Computer Tutor I encountered a multitude of student learning difficulties. By working with the individual students, creative solutions were structured and successfully executed. Tutoring the non-traditional students to achieve their goals was by far the greatest reward. Their resulting change in demeanor was very heart warming. What more can a teaching professional ask? Having a very positive impact on a student’s life and be paid for it.

After graduating from art school in 1983, I have worked for numerous screen print and souvenir companies in Colorado, Texas and New Mexico. I was responsible for creating various ddesignsm, mostly cartoons and humour, to go on a variety of different items (picture frames, mugs, etc.) In the 1990 I taught cartooning classes at Trinidad State Jr. College and have written and illustrated 3 books on Colorado history and folklore.
The style of teaching that works best for me is one of "continuous encouragement." I first find out what the students strengths and weaknesses are then focus on how to improve on them. It's slow and steady but seems to work.

As a Michigan resident, I was unable to find sny substantial work in the fiels of Social Work once I earned my BA degree. So, I worked in 3-4 school districts over a two year period before gaining full time work with the State. Eventually, in 2006 I lost my position with the state and again returned to substitute teaching. I enjoy young poeple and giving them a strong dose of encouragement even in brief one-day encounters. My knowledge of social science and behaviors has enabled me to realize a high rate of satisfaction and sucess with each student that I face. Even students who are named as trouble makers exhibit self confidence and control when a mutual trust and respect are established. Strong written and oral communication skills are useable skills needed at all grade levels.

I have worked with children in one capacity or another for over 20 years. I love to help children achieve their educational goals and to succeed in any way possible. I enjoy watching a child's face light up when they have accomplished something that has been a challenge for them. It is a joy for me to spread the gift of knowledge. All children can learn to full potential if given the attention and opportunities necessary.

My background is in International Montessori Education , as well as psychology. I taught, tutored and trained teachers for 20+ years and founded a successful private school, though tutoring is my favorite part of teaching. I love learning and applying new formats, as well as using the many skills I have developed over time. My experience in teaching reading is extensive, probably my greatest strength, and I also tutored all ages and in the areas of writing, study skills, critical thinking, and perceptual skills.
The first thing I do is create a personal connection with a child and get to know their individual needs, strengths and learning style. Once that rapport is built the child can relax and focus, knowing they are supported and valued. Bringing energy, a love of learning and a sense of fun, as well as healthy expectations, fuels a great learning environment. I also have high sta ... read more

Most of my career experience has been in News-Editorial and creative writing. As my daughter and son (now young adults) have grown and matured, I have been involved at several levels and in various paid and volunteer capacities as teacher, assistant/aide, and tutor. My substitute teaching experience primarily has been in the subjects of English, social studies, music, math, and art.
I am patient, kind, respectful, and good-humored. I have noted that my own excitement in learning is contagious. I believe each of us excels in individual areas of particular interest. I support self-esteem, self-respect, and respect for others, and I think these qualities and values are self-motivating. I learn, as well, from those whom I teach.

I think good class materials, sufficient examples and explanations are important for effective learning. I believe it is the responsibility of the teacher to tutor students in an interesting and engaging manner. The teaching should show the elegance and beauty of the subject as well as its applicability to solve concrete and real world problems. Teaching is not just instructing or imparting information to students, but it is meant to empower students to take responsibility for their learning. While students must ultimately take responsibility for their own learning, a teacher can often inspire them to learn. As a teacher, I prefer to use my enthusiasm to help students get involved in the subject. Even when discussing hard scientific terms, I explain them with day to day things and analogies making it easy for the students to absorb. I am devoted to getting to know my students, like know ... read more
