While pursuing my Master of Arts at Ohio University, I worked as a long-term substitute teacher as a Title 1 Reading Specialist. I enjoyed this work immensely and focused on grades 1-5. In these tri-weekly sessions, we practiced our reading skills and built our vocabulary. During the 2008-2009 school year, I tutored 4th & 5th graders in reading at IPS #78. I worked at LearningRX as a cognitive skills trainer where I worked with students who were having difficulty in school and I was able to find their areas of difficulty and help build those areas up while also helping with their memory, visual acuity, and processing speed. I like to have a relationship with the students I tutored where they feel comfortable with me; I want them to be able to tell me the problems they're having with the work and what I can do to help. I like to be friendly with them while still being an authority figure where they want to do their best. I think this type of relationship allows me to push the students to their maximum limit without discouraging them when we're having a difficult session.

My style is relaxed, but focused, with a touch of humor to ease nerves. The first step is creating comfort and trust between the student and the tutor. To do this, when coaching Chemistry, I would have the student present a problem. Then, I'd say, well, let's figure this out together. And, truly, that is what we would do, step by step, by asking questions. What do we know? What do we need to figure out?
