Patient English and Drama Teacher

I am a Certified Teacher in the State of Washington and currently work as a Substitute Teacher for the Fife Public Schools. I enjoy teaching Elementary Education, Preschool, Drama, and English. I taught Drama for The City of Lakewood back in 2008 to 2010. We read and acted out plays, performed Improvisations, played theatre games, and had fun with many other activities.I also performed in plays at The Lakewood Playhouse and recently became a member of The Dramatists Guild of America. When I teach, I try my best to be open minded, and to give choices to the student, rather than follow a closed-box cookie cutter curriculum. I've found it's important to find a personal way of learning for a specific student. Variety is important, because every child learns a little differently. Some kids learn by listening, others by seeing. Some kids learn only when they're making things. Encouragement and recognition when progress is attained by the student is a great incentive.
I'm currently a student in school who has had a wide range of experience in various different subjects, specifically working best with mathematics, science and language arts in the elementary and middle school level. I'm familiar with I've been doing my best to educate myself in as best as I can, not simply for the sole purpose of filling a resume, but for the sake of learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a retired school teacher that has been tutoring all elementary grade students, as well as intermediate students. I have a great deal of teaching in both teaching and tutoring. I feel very confident to teach all subjects in the elementary grade levels. I am a positive, sensitive teacher and I feel that all students can succeed if they are taught with the following in mind: the learning style/s of the student, the developmental level of the student, changing the motivational level of student (if necessary), an accurate evaluation of the student is analyzed, determine realistic goals and keep the student on task with an enjoyable environment that is conducive to learning.
My teaching style is usually a one-on-one approach beginning with material that is proven to be relatively easier for the student so that that we can establish an enjoyable, interactive approach. We will progr ... read more

I began teaching when I was homeschooling my own children. They joined a weekly co-op and I was asked to teach high school level writing, public speaking and music appreciation for co-op students(not all at the same time). I discovered that students who took my classes were later commended by professors in college for their writing and speaking skills. I began substitute teaching in 2001, and eventually obtained my master's degree in secondary education. I have continued to work in the public schools as a substitute teacher. Because I am a writer, myself, I have spent a great deal of time learning how to communicate principles of grammar, organization of materials and writing style.
I believe that all learning builds upon a foundation of previous learning. The key to helping a student to retain information is to make certain that student possesses all the prior knowledge need ... read more

It is my belief that teaching truly works only in partnership with learning. My preferred approach to teaching is to start by finding out about students' needs and interests to help them develop and meet their goals. By planning out what students have to learn and showing how these things can lead to what they want, teachers bring students into the process of taking responsibility for their own education. Finally, accepting responsibility for their own education allows students to become life-long learners, which improves their ability to adapt and change with future challenges.
I have worked with students of almost every age and level. My first teaching degree was a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education. With that degree, I worked in a preschool, and I have substituted extensively in elementary schools and in middle and high schools for 12 years, learning to work with math ... read more

As a teacher's-assistant for children ages 4-6 I have been able to gain experience working with them one on one and in whole groups for almost two years. This has taught me the value of identifying with the child's unique learning needs in order to encourage and drive their academic success. I believe children need patience from their tutors, steady encouragement, and to be in a positive environment that allows them to feel comfortable, focused, and ready to learn without distraction. The importance of good and fun learning early on is so vital to children, and I believe it is our duty as adults to encourage this on a daily basis.
I have a B.A. in Technical Theatre. This knowledge in the backstage end of theatre deals greatly in literature, particularly the study of dramatic writing. Having already a strong knowledge of English studies this experience has further aided my skills ... read more

I just graduated from PLU with a degree in Business, a concentration in human resources, and a minor in psychology. I maintained a high GPA throughout my college experience and graduated with honors. I have very good study skills and am very organized. I took a variety of classes and excelled in writing papers and test preparation. I have never tutored children but have given children riding lessons and have helped 4-H children learn horsemanship skills. I consider myself very patient and a good teacher. When they don't understand something I work hard to try to explain it in a different way. I have also corrected and given feedback on fellow college student’s papers and assignments.
I love helping and teaching children. I have given riding lessons to all ages of children for years, realizing there is no better feeling than helping children accomplish their goals. I would love to h ... read more

I consider myself to be fun and entertaining and very approachable in my teaching methods. I never lose patience with students and believe that making mistakes is equally as important as making progress. All students can become better writers with a little hard work and a bit of desire to do so, and I can give them the tools to produce their best writing to date.
I have worked with at-risk children in the Chicago Public Schools system to teach a wide range of skills, primarily focusing on college readiness skills, essay and resume writing, ACT preparation, and remedial and advanced reading techniques. I am also highly qualified to teach speech and journalism, and have a year of experience in each as well. I feel I can make the most impact on students when I work with them one-on-one, and so I am excited to transition from the full-time teaching to the tutoring field.

I am highly qualified to tutor in the areas of English/reading/writing. I currently volunteer at my son's school and assist children with assignments, I have created well written manuals and marketing materials for local businesses and have also written brief articles for the Herald newspaper. English has always come naturally to me and I've found writing to be a fun outlet for all of my energy and would love an opportunity to share my education and teach others.
I am an outgoing, positive individual and this style comes across clearly when I work with children. I have a gift when it comes to making learning fun and rewarding. Much of a person's self esteem is derived from their accomplishments, therefore it is important to me that the children that I work with learn "how" to do the work, rather than someone giving up on teaching and doing it for them. I am very patient. If I have ... read more

I believe all children can learn if given proper encouragement to develop their desire for knowledge. I greet students with a smile, their name, and a comment to show that I've been thinking about their progress and care about them when they are away from me because that's just me. I constantly evaluate my teaching and try to fit the style of learning to the student; some students respond to movement, others to music, others to humor, some are visual learners, while others are auditory learners, etc. I believe children can reach their potential when given the appropriate surroundings and learning experience.
High school counselors steered me toward math and sciences. During my thirty years as an elementary teacher I taught third grade with the exception of second grade and fourth grade for one year each. After retiring my school district hired me to attend workshops on writing ... read more

My experiences as a home school instructor for my children at the secondary level of education, as a personal tutor for SAT and GRE test preparation, and as a teaching assistant at the university level have provided me with the requisite skills to assist students at various levels of education. In addition to preparing and presenting a full curriculum (including, music, art and foreign language) for my children over a period of four years, I also have two years experience tutoring in basic grammar and writing skills and library research techniques to university students.
My teaching style, derived from a one on one approach as both a home tutor and teaching assistant, is simple: provide an open environment in which pupils feel free to ask any question. The most important aspects of tutoring are positive reinforcement, repetition, and assisting students as they develop confidence an ... read more

I have solid teaching and tutoring experience in both classroom and a one on one scenario. I taught English for a private academy in South Korea to children ages K-12 and also tutored adults one on one. After completing my contract in South Korea I returned to graduate school in order to earn a master’s degree in Business Administration at Ohio University. I choose Ohio as they offered me a half scholarship, due to my writing ability, and the opportunity to work in the Professional Writing Center for the College of Business. At this position I was able to tutor college age students, foreign and domestic, to improve their English writing ability.
I enjoy teaching students of all ages. My teaching style is very simple; I set goals and expectations upon meeting the parents and then set sub goals with the students that are achievable but challenging. I believe in teaching the stu ... read more
