A Little Bit About Me...

I have always loved learning. Reading and writing have been two of my primary hobbies since childhood. Still, when I was in elementary and high school, there were times when I felt that the educational system was lacking. I am not alone in this experience, and I have observed countless students flourish with a level of personal and individual care that is unavailable in a standard classroom environment. As a result of my ardor for both teaching and learning, while earning a master of divinity with an emphasis in counseling, I have spent my evenings tutoring professionally. A Little Bit About Me...

My experience in paid teaching (excluding numerous volunteer and non-paid opportunities) range from teaching Vietnamese refugee "boat-people" children (news film footage archived by Vanderbilt University) in 1975 through years of Orange County (CA) adult education in English as a Second Language to my present duties in metro Denver of teaching immigrant adults in English as a Second Language. Along the way, I also experienced fulltime day teaching of a kindergarten class in Fresno and a combined 7th-8th grade moderate-to-severe special education class in Inglewood, California.
My teaching style could be described as modified Montessorian, in an attempt to appeal to all the senses, and to affect the learning channels of each student as a unique individual. I have been involved every year since 1975 in the work of an educator, mostly for pay, but occasionally as a volunteer, either community- or faith-based, in three states and two foreign countries. Leadership was usually demonstrated in teaching for proprietory institutions in curriculum development and in the processes of actual recruitment. In fifth-grade teaching of English language learners, my class for two semesters won the highest attendance record for 3rd-5th graders in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Each time I have taught a different age-level I have sought to accommodate myself to the learning style of that particular level, whether psychokinetic for kindergarten and preschool, audio-visual for lower elementary, or verbal-phonemic for upper-level students and adults.
