As a 2010 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, I was very much driven to achieve a high level of excellence in education. I was President of our local Kentucky Education Association and Chair of our Student Government Association. I have earned two bachelor degrees, a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, which has enabled me to have a wide variety of experiences. I have taught in all elementary grade levels. I taught preschool for 2 years, taught kindergarten 1 year, taught 7-8 grade remedial Math for 1 year. I then taught in the same K-12 school for 28 years. I taught the 4th grade for 26 years where I taught English, Reading, Writing, and Social Studies. I was the writing KERA trainer and portfolio writing leader and trainer for my school. I was selected as Teacher of the Year for my school 2 times. I was on the Site Based Decision Making Council for 2 terms. I am retired and was a substitute teacher for 5 years. I feel each child is unique, so their learning style is unique. I especially enjoy using the explorative method of teaching where the child is encourage to explore, examine, and discover with my assistance. I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. These are ultimately shared in a whole group and or one on one setting. When tutoring, I do a very brief mini lesson on the objective and we go immediatley into the task at hand with instant feedback and adaptation between the reader or writer and myself as we progress through the lesson. If the student is hung on vowel digraphs, we stop and examine those and do word work with several examples. My next choices for them to read would have more vowel digraphs. If my student is confused about where to put the punctuation in a quotation, we will do several real world scenerios where he will write statements, questions, and exclaimations correcting as we go along.
