I will receive my bachelors degree in mathematics from Purdue University in May 2012; however I began my college career in math education so I have taken many methods/teaching courses. In the past I have done short-term tutoring for algebra/pre-algebra, geometry, high school calculus (calc 1), and algebra II. I have also tutored in English as a second language, specifically for native Spanish speakers.
I specifically enjoy helping with homework or test prep, where the student has specific problems to work through. Otherwise, I can explain basic concepts and give practice problems to work through. Every student is different. They all have different experiences and learning styles. Sometimes teachers can just try to explain concepts and ideas the way that they understand things. I like to first ask students questions to help me understand where they are, what they specifically do and do not understand. This helps me to figure out how to help the student. Also in my experience, teachers teach only one method of solving a specific problem and that way may not be easy for that student. My teaching style is helping the student arrive at the correct solution. In problem based courses this is usually done through asking the student what they think the next step should be and guiding them through the process of problem solving. Once they start to understand problem solving then they do not only improve in the course that I am tutoring them in but in their other courses as well. In a nutshell I try to help students learn how to learn.

My teaching style is that all students learn differently, so why to teach them using the same methods? I learned through college that I am a very visual learner, but if the class isn’t taught that way, it’s my job to present that information in a way that helps me learn. Also, the teacher should play a dichotomous role to the student; on one hand, he or she must be patient and lenient and willing to teach the student to the best of their abilities, but also, the teacher cannot be so lenient that the student doesn’t get work done. I am a proponent of the authoritative relationship between students and learners. A teacher has to be helpful and calm, but not so easygoing that work isn’t getting done.

My public speaking class is extremely participatory, both so students can gain experience speaking in front of an audience and because this format seems to keep students more interested in the material. My experience teaching children in theatre was also very participatory. I believe that students learn best when they can understand a given concept from several different angles. In most cases, the student just needs a clearer explanation than his/her book or instructor is providing. Also, I like to create visual examples that make an abstract concept into something more practical.
