I teach classical piano, so my students work on scales, arpeggios and etudes to quickly enhance their technique. Their repertoire is varied, but always include piece by one of the greatest composers of the past (Bach, Mozart, Brahms, to mention only a few) and a piece by contemporary composer. The students also play light jazz and they enjoy it a lot.
Over 20 years of teaching experience as a school music teacher, private piano and theory instructor, and conductor for church and community choirs. I will receive my bachelors degree in mathematics from Purdue University in May 2012; however I began my college career in math education so I have taken many methods/teaching courses. In the past I have done short-term tutoring for algebra/pre-algebra, geometry, high school calculus (calc 1), and algebra II. I have also tutored in English as a second language, specifically for native Spanish speakers.
I specifically enjoy helping with homework or test prep, where the student has specific problems to work through. Otherwise, I can explain basic concepts and give practice problems to work through. I really like to work through a lot of examples because without practice it can be difficult to apply.

While attending Danville Area Community College from 2003 to 2005, I tutored middle school and high school students through a program called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). This included individual and group tutoring sessions in all subjects. I mostly tutored in mathematics as this is my specialty. After transferring to Eastern Illinois University, I began my pursuit of a teaching certificate in secondary education with my concentration in mathematics. Throughout my tutoring experience, I noticed oftentimes, students wouldn’t be able completely grasp the concepts the first time when I explained to them. To resolve this problem, I have learned that it is helpful to explain the process of solving the same problem from a different perspective or using a different method. Also, sometimes after I explain a problem to the student, to make sure that the student really understands the concept, I ask the student to explain the same problem back to me or to another student who is also confused about the same problem.
