Dyslexia is one of my top subjects! Orton-Gillingham (all ages)

I am an Orton-Gillingham certified and Barton Advanced certified dyslexia specialist with over a decade of experience working with children and adults who have dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. I also know Lindamood-Bell(r) and several other programs. I provide assessment/screening for learning challenges, and recommend programs/approaches that will be successful for that student, homeschool support, and referrals to other tutors as needed.
I work on fostering independence and I am understanding and compassionate. I also like to play games and encourage my students to have fun while learning! As someone with a learning disability and anxiety myself, I understand kids who have these struggles.

A good education will help confidence and income potential.

My teaching style is hands on. I get to know the student I am tutoring, figure out why they are struggling and create a plan specific to their needs.
I have tutored several students in Calculus 1, algebra and geometry. I helped several students with their placement exams in math for colleges. I worked at Inver Hills Community college tutoring center tutoring Math and Science. Being a Dyslexic that worked my way through an engineering degree. I know how important teaching and learning style is. I am also working towards becoming a Barton Certified Tutor for Dyslexia.

More About This Tutor...

From 1980-1989 I worked as a Program Coordinator for a Developmental Achievement Center for mentally handicapped adults. My responsibilities included teaching, preparing learning materials for basic reading, personal finance, and vocational skills, implementing behavior programs, supervising 7 staff members, and writing quarterly lesson plans and progress reports. I also spent a couple of hours per week for 2 years, tutoring my blind supervisor on the use of computers. In 1992, I went back to college to pursue my true passion, and earned a degree in mathematics and computer science. During this time, I volunteered a couple of hours per week tutoring secondary students in math, and elementary students in reading. After college, I started my own company providing website development, database programming, and custom software for small businesses.

As a graduate of the University of Saint Thomas, I have an English degree and am a few classes/credits short of a Business Administration degree. First, I love helping people learn. I strive to show students and people that chemistry, math and science is all about a thought process and is something that everyone can learn. Teaching sciences is about helping and showing students how to approach the problems, and problem solve not to just solve problems individually. I also believe in using and finding many methods/examples to find how the student learns best.
I have extensive experience in teach chemistry to students. In the past while at the University of Wyoming I had extensive one on one tutoring sessions with both college students and HS students (AP students). I have also tutored in math, and physics in the past also.

I have a very modifiable style of teaching, meaning I cater to the student or students. I quickly learn the curriculum and can find multiple ways to teach it. This allows me to utilize the students major styles of learning and develop the areas where they may struggle. Teaching this way helps mold a complete student who is able to understand themselves and can learn from any lesson.
While attending and completing four years of Education courses at a well respected institution I was focused and driven to complete the curriculum and focus on creative lesson planning. Maintaining a GPA of 3.6 in Education courses while participating in four years of collegiate sports really polished my ability to multi-task. The preparation and focus applied in college paired with an immense interest in History has molded me into a life learner as well as teacher. Most of my experience is related t ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a preschool teacher for approximately 2 years in Head Start programs. I have substitute taught in the last year. I also was a early childhood special education paraprofessional for 1 year. I have also been a lead teacher in a learning center.
I prefer to assertive in discipline but try to understand where children are coming from. I want children to learn above all else. I think that you need to be understanding but stern. I think that you need to be compassionate yet thorough.

I am a patient tutor who will happily explain a point in many different ways until it clicks for my student. I pay careful attention to teaching styles that do and don't work for my students so I may taylor my style to them. I am an enthusiastic learner and I love showing my students how much fun they can have, too. When subjects get complicated, I'm great at simplifying the tricky parts and putting it into easy to understand words. Flash cards, pictures, and mnemonic devices are all tricks I've used.

More About This Tutor...

I really do place something of a premium on being able to connect with all of my students on an academic and personal level. I believe that this helps them as they know that their teacher and tutor cares about them and their future and, as such, this causes them to grow and excel. I can attest to such things happening with many of my students and for that I am incredibly thankful.
I have done a lot of teaching and tutoring, both with adults and young people. Most of my experience, though, comes from working with high school and junior high school students. I spent the majority of that time as a tutor/ mentor and would work with the students one on one or in small groups, both in the library or in the classroom. It was really the most wonderful experience and I was able to provide tremendous benefits to the students on both an academic and personal level.

I enjoy the diverse learners that an urban setting can bring. Different experiences and different lives can lead to many futures. I think that the key to a child's learning is to provide real life application and deliver instruction in a way that sparks a student's interest. I am patience, creative, and understanding enough to discover with the student how do to this.
I have always wanted to be a teacher. My parents were both educators and instilled me with the desire to value an education. Being a Metropolitan State graduate, I understand first hand what an impact that a good education can have on urban students. During my own education, I strived to set an example for them by maintaining a 4.0 GPA in all my courses and successfully completing student teaching in the midst of having difficult circumstances myself, a disability.
