I know that students can work and achieve if the right kind of motivation is given. Each child has their own learning style and interest which needs to be taken into consideration when working with thenm and then to be taught in that mode and style. While you must objectively assess the childs level, you must also be intuitive. I currently work and teach at the International School of Tegucigalpa. I am a high school world history, psychology and comparative government. I have also taught economics at the high school level.
