A Little Bit About Me...

As a communications professional, I have more than 20 years of experience as a writer and editor. I have mentored numerous entry-level staff members and have also been responsible for physician and sales education at several corporate entities. I have also taught volunteers and coached fellow writers. My experience includes corporate and non-profit writing and editing as well as being an author of several published short stories (in Chicken Soup for the Soul and other publications) as well as a published children's book for ages 8-10. I teach by example, leading the student through a problem by asking questions about each step so that they can learn how to approach the problem themselves. I watch and evaluate the students as they work and provide guidence when thy make errors. I enjoy interacting with children of all ages and I do so in a kind and curteous manner. In my acedemic training I have taught Lab classes in general, analytical, organic, biochemistry and advanced chemistry courses. I greatly enjoy teaching. Much of my style is entertaining and process oriented in nature. Story, metaphor and an understanding of the student having “the idea before the subject being taught” are vital. For me, the underlying concepts are of vital importance before true learning can occur. Knowing what a “mammal” is comes before knowing how we classify “mammals”. Generally, I am able to meet students where they are and utilize “foreword chaining” learning styles with frequent, non boring interactions to progress learning. Rote memory rarely works, but pneumonic, metaphor and story often do. I am very aware of differing learning styles, as well as differing modalities (visual, auditory, kinetic) of learning.
