I teach by example, leading the student through a problem by asking questions about each step so that they can learn how to approach the problem themselves. I watch and evaluate the students as they work and provide guidence when thy make errors. I enjoy interacting with children of all ages and I do so in a kind and curteous manner. I am a good listener and have the patience and skills to understand where a child needs the most help. In my acedemic training I have taught Lab classes in general, analytical, organic, biochemistry and advanced chemistry courses. As part of my training I have been instructed in Mathmatics to the level of Calculus. I am currently volunteering as editor for ttwo newsletters for non-profit organizations. I have wrote several publications including a Master's thesis and a Ph.D tthesis.I have a background in biology at the undergraduate level as well.

My teaching style has been a very hands-on approach in the past due to my experience with environmental education. As a tutor, I strive to offer my assistance in a way children can understand. I was a substitute teacher assistant for children with special needs ages 3-21, on and off for the past 6 years. I have 6 months of experience in outdoor education teaching various science classes and other outdoor, leadership and art classes/skills. I also tutored college undergrads in calculus and botany for a year in college.

I greatly enjoy teaching. Much of my style is entertaining and process oriented in nature. Story, metaphor and an understanding of the student having “the idea before the subject being taught” are vital. For me, the underlying concepts are of vital importance before true learning can occur. Knowing what a “mammal” is comes before knowing how we classify “mammals”. Generally, I am able to meet students where they are and utilize “foreword chaining” learning styles with frequent, non boring interactions to progress learning. Rote memory rarely works, but pneumonic, metaphor and story often do. I am very aware of differing learning styles, as well as differing modalities (visual, auditory, kinetic) of learning. The professors who most impressed me were extremely challenging. One exceptional professor jumps out at me. Her passion for teaching was inarguable and her skill was remarkable. She was witty and smart. I remember sitting on the edge of my seat, clenched tight, simultaneously intrigued and terrified. She could tell stories that left us in stitches or scare us into studying for the entire weekend. I have come across few professors with so much excitement for teaching. I believe I bring excitement to my students. Developing relationships with students is imperative as well.
