Experience Summary
I have completed a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science with an emphasis in Communications which stressed the importance of varied communication styles when discussing scientific concepts. I have worked as a Clinical Teaching Assistant at Palmer College of Chiropractic. This experience further added teaching experience. The American Red Cross has additionally certified me to teach any course in which I have received further certification. My Bachelor’s degree is in Social Work, and I have over 20 years experience working in environments with troubled youth and children in general. This experience often included homework help. Additionally, I have over 4 years experience as a Martial Arts Instructor/Sensei for children and adults.
Teaching Style
I greatly enjoy teaching. Much of my style is entertaining and process oriented in nature. Story, metaphor and an understanding of the student having “the idea before the subject being taught” are vital. For me, the underlying concepts are of vital importance before true learning can occur. Knowing what a “mammal” is comes before knowing how we classify “mammals”. Generally, I am able to meet students where they are and utilize “foreword chaining” learning styles with frequent, non boring interactions to progress learning. Rote memory rarely works, but pneumonic, metaphor and story often do. I am very aware of differing learning styles, as well as differing modalities (visual, auditory, kinetic) of learning.
