My comments on tutoring College Algebra : Took Algebra, and use mathematics daily.

Began as a Teaching Assistant (TA) in the Michigan Technological Universities (MTU) physics department as a physics lab TA for 3 years. Then I helped develop an Astronomy Lab and was the lab TA for a year. I then was a TA for a large lecture physics class for engineering students where I helped students on a 1-1 basis and helped the professor manage the class. In my final years as a Masters student at MTU, I helped run the online astronomy class and was the TA, grader, and developer of the assignments. Since moving to the University of Utah, I have been a TA for another large lecture class where I ran smaller sections for students to come and ask questions and get homework help. I have also been an astronomy tutor.

One of the key motivators for learning is the link between theoretical math or science topics and everyday problems that a student can solve using these skills. For example, to help a geometry student understand the significance of the area of a prizm, I asked him to consider how much paint he needs to buy if he wants to re-paint his room. A max/min calculus solution can help select the minimum fence length to create the largest yard for a dog. I also try to approach teaching the same concept from several different angles. Each student will have their own process of internalizing a specific concept and it's just a matter of finding the right path to get him or her to understand. I love teaching because I love passing on knowledge. I believe anyone can learn anything they want, it just takes us all different lengths of time and effort to achieve our educational goals. As a tutor and a TA I was always trying to rethink my presentation of the material when the students seemed confused. We all think about math in slightly different ways, so I was always trying to adapt my explanations to their style of thinking. I am patient, easy-going, friendly, and reliable.
