A Little Bit About Me...

I've always believed that children learn by doing. I would rather have my students get real hands-on experience because concepts can be better attained and understood if children get real experience with it. I also believe that children learn differently from one another and a teacher should be able to accommodate the different learning styles of her or his students. One method may not work for a student, so I feel that it is the teacher's responsibility to make sure each student reaches their full potential by finding ways that will work for her/his students and then incorporate these differences in the classroom.

I evaluate each child during my first session to determine their learning style and their level of need. Once we establish that, I tailor a program of study designed to improve not only the current subject at hand but also to provide long term study habits they can take into their future learning experiences. I use various methods of oral, written and guided reading, memorization and visual learning to reach as many of the brain's centers of learning as possible to truly help the child retain the information long term.
I have a long history of tutoring experience along with substitute teaching at The Baylor School in Chattanooga from 2000 until 2008 and prior to that at various private homes for 2 years. Teaching is an exciting profession for me. I believe all kids including the most intellectually disabled can learn. I believe in setting high but realistic goals for students. Learning starts before children enter school and should be integrated between home and school. I am a firm believer in laying strong foundations in the lower grades, and building upon this as the child develops. Teaching children through systematic and explicit instruction has worked best for the students in my classes.
