A Little Bit About Me...

While attending Claflin University in the pursuit of obtaining duel BA's in the field of journalism and sociology, my off times was spent in the middle schools of Orangeburg, SC for nearly six years. I spent 4-5 hours in the classroom (daily) as an assistant and tutor/mentor in language arts classes grades 6-8. My majoring in sociology allows me to use human behavioral knowledge to reach kids effectively in order to sustain their focus which allows them to embrace the concept of learning. Since I acquired language using primarily the conversational method, that is my basic approach to teaching. Of course there are the basics of grammar and syntax, style and such, all of which are necessary, but if you cannot open your mouth and produce an intelligible phrase, then what good is it to acquire another language? I approach this method through dialogue with my pupil - the Aristotelian method, if you will. I ask the questions, they provide the responses and I correct them on the points of grammar that are applicable to the extent situation. This, I believe, frames the lesson in a practical application, as opposed to mere rote memorization. It's the method that worked for me, so I believe in it and I use it.
