My comments on tutoring Reading : As a tutor of 10th- and 11th-grade foreign exchange students, I have found that advancing their reading comprehension skills serves as a prelude to massaging their competency in writing. I am also hired each year by Pearson Education, Inc. to assess the reading comprehension skills of fifth graders taking the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA test).

I am foremost a writer whose 38-year, award-winning career is rooted in journalism. However, I also have an extensive teaching background. I have taught writing labs at St. Thomas University – Miami, Florida (1987-88), Mississippi State University (1988-89) and Texas A&M University (1989-93); and I currently offer tutoring services to 10th- and 11th-grade foreign exchange students from all over the world. Some of my tutoring involves preparing students to take the college-entrance SAT. Reading, Writing, and More

I have no set style of teaching. I try to understand how to benefit the individual by examining their needs. Then, we go from there. Some students need an analytical approach, so the material can best be presented as a formula. Others need a creative approach. It really just depends on the student.
I have a Bachelors in English Literature w/a certificate in Technical Writing from the University of North Texas. I have put myself through school by working as server part-time. My comments on tutoring Reading : As a life-long learner, I enjoy reading all sorts of material every day - fiction and non-fiction, newspapers (real ones and on-line!), magazines and education journals. I enjoy reading a variety of non-fiction topics, including the fields of history, politics, science, health and current world events.

I have joyfully taught students in grades 1 through 5 in Los Angeles urban schools, and in the suburbs of Plano. Ex-classroom school teacher with 10 years plus experience!

My teaching style is one that always tries to relate to the child and to have fun. Does the child enjoy video games, dinosaurs, soccer, dance, or a particular cartoon character? When I discover what it is the child enjoys, I bring that element into the subject we are learning about. If the child likes soccer and struggles in reading, I research about famous soccer players and find books on them. Perhaps, at the end of a teaching session, we go outside and kick the soccer ball for 5 minutes as a source of inspiration to get work completed. Bringing in other ways of learning through play and games is also something I enjoy. Playing simple math games or reading games is a easy way to teach a child, without them realizing they are learning.
