My comments on tutoring Reading : As a tutor of 10th- and 11th-grade foreign exchange students, I have found that advancing their reading comprehension skills serves as a prelude to massaging their competency in writing. I am also hired each year by Pearson Education, Inc. to assess the reading comprehension skills of fifth graders taking the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA test).

I advocate a "hands-on" approach that affords students an opportunity to feel as if they are teaching themselves and I am there only to facilitate the process.

I have a Bachelors in English Literature w/a certificate in Technical Writing from the University of North Texas. I have put myself through school by working as server part-time. This has given me a great deal of patience. I have experience as an office manager for an apartment locator, and I have tutored my friends through their English courses.
I have no set style of teaching. I try to understand how to benefit the individual by examining their needs. Then, we go from there. My comments on tutoring Reading : As a life-long learner, I enjoy reading all sorts of material every day - fiction and non-fiction, newspapers (real ones and on-line!), magazines and education journals. I enjoy reading a variety of non-fiction topics, including the fields of history, politics, science, health and current world events.

I treat children with the same respect and dignity that I treat adults, regardless of their age. I don't use "baby voices," as my goal is to elevate them to their highest academic levels. Ex-classroom school teacher with 10 years plus experience!

My teaching style is one that always tries to relate to the child and to have fun. Does the child enjoy video games, dinosaurs, soccer, dance, or a particular cartoon character? When I discover what it is the child enjoys, I bring that element into the subject we are learning about. If the child likes soccer and struggles in reading, I research about famous soccer players and find books on them. Perhaps, at the end of a teaching session, we go outside and kick the soccer ball for 5 minutes as a source of inspiration to get work completed. Bringing in other ways of learning through play and games is also something I enjoy.
