I have led several workshops about differentiation and developmentally appropriate practices for early childhood educators and parents over the last couple of years. Elementary Math is one of my top subjects! Math was always my strongest subject. Sadly many children struggle with math and the US places very low compared to the rest of the world in Math scores. I have studies the curriculum used in Singapore to understand why their students test so high. I can help your child master math.

A student cannot learn unless he is comfortable and confident. My first priority before teaching is to make sure the student is relaxed and believes he can accomplish the goal. It is of the utmost importance that a student understands the separate components of a theory or process in order to comprehend the larger picture. Therefore, I believe rote learning seriously prohibits true understanding for many students. For example, are they far behind their class or just having problems grasping some concepts? I would modify my teaching style depending on the situation, but in general I identify facts that need to be memorized and concepts that need to be understood. We would work through material, in a textbook, for example. Finally the student must apply logic and related skills (algebra, for example) needed for problem solving. Problem solving ties facts and concepts together and brings a deeper comprehension of and familiarity with the subject.
