My teaching style devotes about half the time to direct instruction, but I make that a firm upper limit. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work. Tutoring demands an even lower percentage of direct instruction than does classroom teaching, and as a tutor I encourage the student to direct his own session as much as possible. I gained my BA in History only after years of serious and devoted study, and I bring a respect for whatever subject I teach to the classroom. My approach to teaching is that all children can learn given opportunities in a "safe" environment. I taught many students with learning challenges and I had to individualize their program. I used multiple intelligences to help students learn using their strengths to help them with their weaknesses. It made learning more fun and easier for them to grasp.
