My approach to teaching is that all children can learn given opportunities in a "safe" environment. I taught many students with learning challenges and I had to individualize their program. I used multiple intelligences to help students learn using their strengths to help them with their weaknesses. It made learning more fun and easier for them to grasp.
I graduated with a BA in French and Elementary Education and taught for 4 years in multi-age classrooms. Then I tutored while I stayed home with my children. I resumed teaching 1995 and earned an MAT in Elementary Education in 1998. Each child is different. A good teacher helps each student meet their expectations while keeping the child interested in the subject matter. Each day my goal is the same, to get the most out of my students, and this can only be done when they are attentive and motivated. The best teachers I've had, and the one's I've gotten the most out of working with, have all had one thing in common; they cared about what they taught and even more so about those whom they were teaching.
As a student I studied languages, earning a degree in English and an extensive minor in French. During my time in college I spent innumerable hours tutoring both. I'm a very enthusiastic teacher. I believe that a student can only learn what they're interested in learning. For this reason, I find that getting the student to be interested in the subject at hand is crucial. Lessons should be fun and engaging. There are different approaches and applications on any given subject and finding the right one for each student allows for personal tailoring of a lesson. My teaching style devotes about half the time to direct instruction, but I make that a firm upper limit. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work. Tutoring demands an even lower percentage of direct instruction than does classroom teaching, and as a tutor I encourage the student to direct his own session as much as possible.
I gained my BA in History only after years of serious and devoted study, and I bring a respect for whatever subject I teach to the classroom.
