My teaching style devotes about half the time to direct instruction, but I make that a firm upper limit. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work. Tutoring demands an even lower percentage of direct instruction than does classroom teaching, and as a tutor I encourage the student to direct his own session as much as possible.

As a PhD student in sociology at the University of Arizona, I work as a teaching assistant, helping students understand upper division course material in sociology. Every student can learn with motivation. Most of my classes were self-paced, and I had great success in motivating students of all types. My most recent position was teaching science to at-risk high school students who averaged 4th grade levels in reading and math. Every participating student earned credits in science, a first for most of them. I attended college at three different schools, on athletic scholarship in two of them. I earned two bachelor degrees, BA in Philosophy and BA in Political Science. After graduating I spent one semester teaching sciences at an outdoor based alternative middle and elementary school just outside of Austin, TX. In college and afterwards I have continued to be involved in issues regarding immigration and minorities. I spent one year living and working in the Central Andes in Peru.
