I recently graduated from the Evergreen State College with a degree in mathematics. My other fields of study included chemistry, computer science, and physics. I have numerous hours of laboratory experience to support my in class and text book understanding of the materials covered. I've been a tutor at TESC for 3 years now working with students from all walks of life and working on any scientific material I've had any experience with. I believe that whenever I'm working with a student they have the capacity to learn and internalize the material. I believe that the student can learn the material. I love teaching students who like to learn. I am pursuing a career as an English Teacher at the college level, and I'll be looking for college positions as soon as my Masters Thesis is reviewed and my graduation paperwork goes through. It is my experience that an instructor delivers more learning when a student has an interest in the subject. "Inspire rather than require," has far greater efficacy in delivering information. I tend to make it fun, interesting and encourage student participation and feedback. Reward, a basic human desire, engenders craving for learning. As each individual’s qualities are unique, I try to determine if one is a visual, auditory or tactile learner. Analogies often make good teaching aids. It is my considered opinion that there are many styles of teaching that can work effectively with students. Generally, I feel that it is best to adapt the style of teaching to the personality, interest, and capability of the student. My preference is working with teens and young adults, with whom I find that a style that guides them to find the answers for themselves is of greatest advantage. To do this, I tend to patiently guide students with a series of questions, only "jumping in" with information when they begin to appear to have reached a point of frustrated impasse. Though my primary study has been of a religious nature, I am very skilled in the other subjects of a quality educational foundation, as well. Since completing my formal degree training I have worked in several capacities in the field of education. I taught inner-city young adults in Washington, D.C. in all GED subjects. I worked as a Guidance Counselor and Education Services Officer for the Army for eight years. In the past two years I have tutored under the auspices of Tacoma Community College in all GED subjects. Prior to my work with TCC I tutored in the Kid Reach program for three years. Everyone has the ability to learn but not everyone has the same ability. Most people are visual or tactile learners whereas most teachers, in my experience, use verbal/aural instruction methods. I believe in tailoring my teaching to the needs of the student and not to what I am most relaxed with. I have personally taught several tactile students who had to have something in their hands or they could not grasp the concepts. Other times I've instructed students in strong visual methods incorporating drawings, artwork and short videos.
