My major complaint with the current pedagogy of STEM fields is there focus on teaching students to be able to produce answers so a slew of canned and frankly uninteresting problem sets. There is so much interesting literature, philosophy, and history in the fields of science and physics that it makes very little sense to muddle with these less helpful and dull techniques and problems. Physics and math education has become so perforated with cliche that shows like Cosmos and the elegant universe can become hits by just regurgitating the same buzz-theories (Schrodinger's cat, Black holes, the multiverse etc.) in the same, cloddish language (space-time is 'warped' and twisted, quantum 'weirdness', etc). My comments on tutoring Trigonometry : Covering sine, cosine and tangent functions especially in problem-solving. Laws of sines and cosines. Use of radians and solving problems with TI-83 calculator. Cover periodic functions with varying amplitudes, and graphing all functions.

I try to present each subject area as a sample problem and show EXACTLY how a solution is reached. Then I invite the student's participation with a view toward understanding the student's thinking. While accuracy in math is vital, understanding the steps involved is crucial.
Eight years of tutoring math subjects for middle school and high school students. I have a keen interest in math and have always enjoyed helping students grasp the essence of a problem and its mathematical solution. The first things in tutoring is to find out what someone wants. Complete a HW, prepare for a test or just improve overall. I then set a pace for them, either attacking a problem immediately or giving a small lecture. I explain a concept, then work examples. I clearly state what steps I go through, and after each step I make sure they understand. After a successful example I require them to do it for me. This can one or many cycles of examples and assignments. I will send them HW problems or answer questions online if I feel it necessary. I encourage them to feel good about understanding a problem, and not to panic if they don't. I try to provide the best value for them so that one day they will not need a tutor's service again.
