I love working with children, as I have coached or tutored school aged children for the last six years. This has taught me to be very patient as well as given me the ability to approach a subject from three or four different angles until the student gets it. I often ask many questions in an attempt to get the student to come to conclusions on their own, rather than me telling them outright. From January of 2002 to June 2008 I taught rock climbing classes for Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Oregon. These were 1 credit PE classes that covered beginning, intermediate and advanced rock climbing. I prepared lessons, gave lectures, supervised student practice and assessed student performance. In addition during the 2003/03 I tutored students in Geology and Mathematics while I attended Clackamas Community College.
My teaching style is easy going and less formal. I know that each student learns best in a unique way. I feel that the most effective teachers try to mold their teaching style to the student rather than the other way around. Also I like to make sure that the student learns how the particular information being taught fits in the larger field of study. I find this greatly enhances retention of information and the ability to use that information.

I went to ITT Technical Institute following that and was offered to Chair School of Drafting & Design. I taught and ran the department for 2 years. I was in charge of 4-10 teachers and 170+ students.
I believe in identifying the learning style of the student which can take some time with some. Are they a visual learner I draw pictures, maps, charts and video; if an audio learner tapes, lecture, youtube, video, etc,.. and if a kinesthetic learner then they need the hands on experience to develop the learning that is needed, so then standing back to guide the thought process without doing it for them.

A Little Bit About Me...

Just telling a child how to do a problem is not effective. I believe a teacher needs to explain the logic and reasoning behind solving certain problems certain ways. Knowing this can help the child discover what works specifically to him/her. If a child learns to reason for his/her self, they gain the ability to be lifetime learners. My hope is, that instead of dreading school they gain confidence in their abilities to figure things out, and therefore find joy in learning. Above all it is important to listen to the kids, stay positive, and never show frustration.
