I love to teach!

I like to ask questions of my students so they're the ones who figure out the topic as opposed to me telling them. Then I like to expand on that by going into the details of the subject as that's the only way to truly understand something. In my experience, tutoring this way helps the students become familiar with the topic as well as understanding why the topic is important.
I am a graduate of the University of Idaho where I received both my BS and MS in Chemistry. I taught general and physical chemistry laboratory courses while earning my MS as well. Finally, I tutored students in all branches of chemistry including high school level and organic. Since my MS was in physical chemistry, I learned quite a bit about mathematics and have even tutored my own chemistry students in algebra. Chemistry does require algebra, after all.

My comments on tutoring Chemistry : I can teach all of high school chemistry and general college chemistry. I took AP Chemistry in high school, and i have take college chemistry.

My teaching style involves mostly hands on work which helps the student understand what they are doing better.
While I have experience in many subjects the one I have the most experience in and feel most comfortable teaching is Chemistry. I have taken and tutored high school students at my school on chem 1. A Little Bit About Me...

Initially, I like to find out the basics. I want to know their underlying assumptions in any part of academia, whether it's math or science. I have come to find that the very simplest of assumptions can mislead students. I like to start each problem with a new set of assumptions, or a "given", "find", and "solution" step-by-step process. This allows the student to see the problem as a whole and if there are problems, be able to identify where they are beginning whether it's in the initial assumption or in the solution step.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children, as I have coached or tutored school aged children for the last six years. This has taught me to be very patient as well as given me the ability to approach a subject from three or four different angles until the student gets it. I often ask many questions in an attempt to get the student to come to conclusions on their own, rather than me telling them outright. With all my students including with my own daughter I expect them to try. I tend to be unforgiving until I see them try, then I will step in and correct. I am always amazed on how many kids young and old have learned how to sit out and wait till someone just gives them the answer. Science is hard stuff and the best thing that I can do is teach them how to look up the information that they need.

A Little Bit About Me...

Just telling a child how to do a problem is not effective. I believe a teacher needs to explain the logic and reasoning behind solving certain problems certain ways. Knowing this can help the child discover what works specifically to him/her. If a child learns to reason for his/her self, they gain the ability to be lifetime learners. My hope is, that instead of dreading school they gain confidence in their abilities to figure things out, and therefore find joy in learning. Above all it is important to listen to the kids, stay positive, and never show frustration.
