I have years of experience teaching and tutoring English as a second language, both in the U.S. and overseas. My students have included high school students, community college students, university and postgraduate students, and working professionals of all ages. I have taught speakers of Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Arabic, Farsi and Turkish. I am also an experienced tutor in law, having taught both law and paralegal students in substantive law, legal writing, test taking skills, and LSAT preparation. As a classroom instructor, I am conscious that one needs to constantly engage with and interact with the class. I always taught in a tutorial style, where after I've introduced the material the students must solve a puzzle or problem based on it. I believe that to engage students there must be a discovery component to the class. In a tutoring role, one can take the students strengths and build on those. Often a student has lost all confidence (and hope!) and doesn't realize how much he or she knows. By patiently building from simple problems this confidence can be restored.
