My comments on tutoring Latin : Taught and tutored Latin I and II for 10-plus years

After attending (and teaching in) a graduate program in American/British Literature and Language at L.S.U., I realized that my true calling was teaching. I began teaching English, Journalism, S.A.T. Prep., Latin, and other subjects in Springfield, MA in 2003 in an alternative, urban high school. I taught (and tutored after school) until I moved to Florida in 2009, when my spouse began graduate studies at U.S.F. Since then, I have continued to tutor a wide range of students in subjects ranging from high school Latin, 5th grade Math, college English, S.A.T. and G.E.D. Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.
After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.

A Little Bit About Me...

My favorite part of tutoring/teaching is the moment when you can see the proverbial "lightbulb" go off in a students mind. The moment they begin to understand whatever it is you are teaching is such a rewarding experience for me. I wouldn't say I have a set method for tutoring, I gauge an individual's learning style as I get to know their academic strengths and weaknesses and I adapt my teaching methods to fit their specific needs.

High-schoolers are my favorite students because, at 21, I am young enough both to garner respect and to build rapport with them. While accelerated students are often a pleasure, I enjoy working with slower students because their little breakthroughs are eternally satisfying.
