My comments on tutoring Latin : Taught and tutored Latin I and II for 10-plus years

I believe that all students can and will achieve academic success given appropriate instruction; i.e., instruction that is differentiated according to students' specific needs, learning styles, interests, and personal goals. As a classroom teacher and as a personal tutor, I have seen almost miraculous results in a relatively short period of time, both in terms of academic achievement and student confidence. Passion and enthusiasm for learning is contagious, and I am a carrier. For a dedicated instructor, nothing is more satisfying than watching a student "catch" the learning bug.

After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.
Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.

With an extensive academic background in both the sciences and the arts, I have used many methods of learning. My strengths vary from languages to chemistry and I am an avid writer. My favorite part of tutoring/teaching is the moment when you can see the proverbial "lightbulb" go off in a students mind. High-schoolers are my favorite students because, at 21, I am young enough both to garner respect and to build rapport with them. While accelerated students are often a pleasure, I enjoy working with slower students because their little breakthroughs are eternally satisfying.
