Resident Artist and an ASL PRO.

For art, I give direction, let students paint or do art however they want, then I help if needed. I give them pointers and tips for making their pieces better. Art is really how the artist sees it and what they like in the long run. In Sign language, I teach them songs to sign too from the radio and also teach words then becoming sentences. Within a two week period you can learn up to 100 words and a song.

I served as Vice President of Alpha Mu Gamma which is an honors society for foreign language. I was inducted due to my achievements in ASL. I am very passionate about ASL and the Deaf community. I spent a semester observing ASL classrooms with the goal to analyze the difference between hearing teachers and Deaf teachers. I have worked with two ASL clubs in order to advise the club officers on how best to involve students with meets of the Deaf community in a culturally appropriate manner, as well as to increase the clubs visibility on campus. ASL Certified Tutor

I not only tutor American Sign Language, I offer beginner instruction as well. My methods obviously differ between the two, when I tutor I facilitate a very relaxed, fun way of communicating utilizing ASL to appropriate the student's level of skill and determine which areas need work. I like letting the student be in as much control as possible as far as the pace and duration. In a teaching situation, I start with the Alphabet and with the basic building blocks of the language. Each session is then individualized week to week in order to be precursory to the next and structured based on the pace of the student.
I had excelled in my first American Sign Language class in the 10th grade and proceeded to take the progressive courses that my high school offered. I also took a Psychology course and graduated with an Advanced Diploma in 2005. Immediately following graduation, I enrolled ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Teaching is an extremely important job that must be handled with care and concern for the student. I firmly believe it is important to adapt to the students individual learning style and habits, therefore, my style is to adjust to the best method necessary in order to achieve success while learning. Many students are visual learners and prefer a hands on experience, whereas others could prefer oral, written or other teaching techniques in order to process the information. The first few sessions with a student, I prefer to ask them their learning style preference and gather ideas I feel would benefit the learning environment and continue my teaching style as required.
Beginning my sign language career in high school, I have learned to embrace the beautiful language and culture of the deaf community. At that time, I began to tutor a deaf child with minimal language skills and hav ... read more

More About This Tutor...

During lessons, I am patient, calm, well-spoken, but challenging. I continually ask my students questions and make sure the focus stays on them and their learning rather than myself. I find that the discovery approach works well in my classes and students are always willing to participate in fun games and other activities that allow them to find the answer on their own. The best teacher is one that is always willing to learn and wants to help the individual become a well-rounded person, not just someone who can always give the correct answer. Paulo Freire, the late Brazilian Sociologist, was not only one of the greatest thinkers of the century, but also a humble educator. He believed that there should be no set boundaries between student and teacher because all people have something to contribute. He also believed that one's education should be rooted in the one's reality. Thus a "stu ... read more
