A Little Bit About Me...

As a student I was most drawn to the ideas of Piaget and Gardner. Their teaching philosophies made the most sense to me when it came to teaching. Piaget focused on the idea of play as learning. This may sound strange to some, but a child is always learning, no matter they are doing, due to the fact that so many experiences are totally new to them. When children stacks blocks they are exploring many scientific concepts such as balance, gravity, cause and effect and many others. When children scribble with crayons they are exploring many concepts of art and aesthetics. Gardner describes the idea of multiple intelligences. Everyone is good at some aspects of learning and less so in others. Children learn in many different ways.

A Little Bit About Me...

Like a lot of people, I've found that once you get the chance to teach, nothing else is as fun or fulfilling. My personality easy-going, mellow, positive, and tactful. I have found one of my greatest strengths in teaching is offering helpful and proactive feedback that encourages what is done right first, then suggests improvement where needed. In my teaching I try to focus on interdisciplinary concepts and relating art to other fields of knowledge for a more well-rounded and whole learning experience.
During my time in college, I studied both Fine Art Painting and Art Education. Getting my BFA in Painting allowed me to study many disciplines of art while refining my painting techniques. In 2007 I had the wonderful opportunity of being one of two teachers at the Ann Arbor Academy's lower school for students with learning disabilities. I have worked as a Teacher's Assistant for three years where I did extensive tutoring with one student over the course of the year. I substitute taught for two years where I learned a great deal about schools, particularly elementary schools and their various curriculum and expectations for grade levels. As well, I was a full time tutor and mentor for students at Pine Ridge Academy for a year while I lived in Burlington. I also teach the second grade religious school class at my temple. I am also a substitute teacher for a day school. I am currently in graduate school at Eastern Michigan University where I am pursuing a credential in k-12, emotional impairment and learning disabilities.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching students of all ages and I recognize that most students do not get the help they need during the school day, which is why it is important for them to get the help they need outside of class. Each student learns differently and it is important for me to figure out a way that works best for him or her so that I can instill the techniques that will help them throughout their entire educational career. I find that many students get frustrated when they don’t understand and if I take the time to help them at their own pace in a teaching style that works best for them school becomes less stressful. I feel that once students feel confident in the classroom they can enjoy learning and that’s what I hope to give my students.
