My comments on tutoring Special Education : 2-3 years as a substitute teacher.

My method of tutoring is to work with students where they are and add to their skills, to accomplish the final outcome, preferably an "A" or "B." Some students are visual learners and some are informational learners, or some students combine the two. The potential I see in students is what I try to bring out and have them realize they are capable of going a step further, to reach their goal. The importance of education and the students' continuance of same cannot be stressed enough.
I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. A Little Bit About Me...

I began tutoring privately,as well as,for my school's learning center during the early 1990's. I have continued tutoring privately on and off for the past twenty years. I was a substitute teacher in California and Michigan during the 2000's. I also had my own high school level classroom in California for two school years. I was hired on an "Emergency Credential" because I had my BS but no teaching credential. I was laid off due to budget cuts in June of 2003. I also taught "at-risk" elementary age children during the summer for the Glendora Unifed School District in Glendora, CA. I tutored privately for three years from 2005-2008 in south Los Angeles County and north Orange County, CA. I can provide recommendations from these clients if you are interested. My youngest students were in first grade with my oldest students attending college.

A Little Bit About Me...

I will show the student how to do the steps of designing something but make sure that they are doing the clicking on their own computer. I won't take over there mouse or computer and show them. I feel you learn more when you physically perform the tasks yourself while you watch and listen.
I received my Bachelors of Fine Art in Visual Communications from the Art Institute of Michigan. I've designed a logo and business card for a restaurant that has opened in my city and also have done some digital artwork and hand drawn art work that hangs on the walls inside. I've designed a book cover for a published book that is available online. I free lance my graphic design skills whenever I can. My comments on tutoring Special Education : I used to work with kids that had Autism and I loved every second of it.

All students can learn, but they have different learning styles. Identifying a student's strengths and weaknesses is a key step in the learning process. Whatever their particular style is, students learn best in a positive learning environment which ideally will include the following elements: positive reinforcement, a regular study plan, parental support, and a quiet environment. I have found that another key is to give the student some degree of ownership over what they learn by turning more of the responsibility for framing questions and summarizing what they have learned over to them.
