College Student - Eager to Gain Experience!

I have an incredible passion for teaching. I am currently in the process of getting my Bachelors in Secondary Education with a focus in English. I have knowledge of the structure and content of the English language and thoroughly enjoy teaching others composition, spelling, creative writing, reading, vocabulary, etc. I do not have much experience yet in a classroom setting but have volunteered at a middle school while getting my Associates degree. I helped a teacher at a middle school to teach students that were having difficulty in various subjects.
I am a hands on teacher, probably because I am a hands on learner. I find it difficult to learn when an instructor is solely lecturing. I believe that constant practice and hands on lessons are the most effective ways of learning.

With volunteer work at women's shelter's, I read to and helped elementary-age kids learn to read during my time spent with them.
I love being with and teaching children, especially when it comes to reading and books. I find it highly gratifying to see the joy that comes with learning to love to read and the subsequent doors of learning that open as a result. I have worked as a writing tutor with a diversity of college students, ages 16-70, at Yavapai College, Prescott Campus, for the past ten years and continue to do so. I also worked at Yavapai College testing ESL students for several years during those years. In 1995, I taught English to elementary and middle school children in PR China for three months. Finally, I taught French at the Canterbury School in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1987-88.

A Little Bit About Me...

In high school I was able to tutor students in all subjects ranging from English to Math to Musical Studies. Furthering my education at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX really opened my eyes and mind to wider ranges of educational foundations. As a double major in Communication and Classical Studies, I was able to get a well rounded education in all subjects. I feel that I am also skilled in math and got a minor in Art History. As I am a very auditory/visual learner, I tend to to lean towards both auditory and visual techniques. I question the students as to what he or she intended to say in their writing, what is the intent of the paper--will this persuade the reader, inform the reader, compare/contrast ideas-- and see if the writer is in fact accomplishing this goal through effect word choices, sound reasoning, specific examples, and other components of writing. The hope is to edit the document for clarity geared towards the reader of the document and to polish the writing skills of the student.
