I strongly believe in learning by doing. I have never given a lecture or taught something 1on1 without providing practice problems or peppering students with questions. The hardest part about this is getting students to understand that it is okay to ask and answer questions. Most students I have encountered are used to simply looking at the teacher but never really interacting with them. If I ask a question and nobody gets it, I rephrase it, reteach the section that led up to the question and generally try to understand why the question is not being answered. Aside from some initial amount of memorization, students need to learn how to think through concepts and ideas, and the best way to do that, regardless of subject, is ask them things.

I have worked as a tutor throughout my undergraduate career and also for a part of my high school career as well (5 years in all). My tutor experience is primarily in math and chemistry, but I also have experience in other science courses (biology & physics), English and reading, and also in general study habits and study skills. I love meeting and interacting with new people, children and adults alike. I have extreme patience. I believe that it is imperative to make the student feel comfortable in the learning environment. I would never embarrass a student for asking a question. So many times in the past, I have witnessed teachers ridiculing students for asking a question because they genuinely did not understand the subject matter, which prevented the students from asking any more questions in class. It has been written about for centuries where one teacher made all the difference in the decisions that a student made for the rest of his or her life.
