An effective tutor is one who is able to help the student identify their strengths and weakness and then work with the student to increase their understanding, thereby reinforcing their strong points and building strength on weak points. In order to accomplish this, I maintain a very relaxed, comfortable tutoring area so that the student feels completely comfortable discussing their academic strengths and weaknesses. With this trust established, I drive my tutor sessions with questions enabling the student to tell me what they know (or don't know) so that I'm not the one talking the whole time. I love meeting and interacting with new people, children and adults alike. I have extreme patience. I believe that it is imperative to make the student feel comfortable in the learning environment. I would never embarrass a student for asking a question. So many times in the past, I have witnessed teachers ridiculing students for asking a question because they genuinely did not understand the subject matter, which prevented the students from asking any more questions in class. It is also important to know why the student, or his or her parents, believes that he or she needs a tutor.

A Little Bit About Me...

I strongly believe in learning by doing. I have never given a lecture or taught something 1on1 without providing practice problems or peppering students with questions. The hardest part about this is getting students to understand that it is okay to ask and answer questions. Most students I have encountered are used to simply looking at the teacher but never really interacting with them. If I ask a question and nobody gets it, I rephrase it, reteach the section that led up to the question and generally try to understand why the question is not being answered. Aside from some initial amount of memorization, students need to learn how to think through concepts and ideas, and the best way to do that, regardless of subject, is ask them things.
