In a tutoring environment, I believe in discovering each student’s optimal learning strategy, as well as identifying techniques for making other styles of teaching accessible. I aim to enable further education, as well as transmit more urgently needed information. In the process of earning my BA in History (minor in Archaeology), I became familiar with a broad range of historical subjects. My certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) gave me a familiarity with mathematics and statistics, as well as conventions of scientific research and reporting. I like explain the problem to the students and then let them work on few problems on their own. I would then correct the problems that the students were working on and ask if they need any questions. If the students have questions or if they did not get the right answer I would then go over the problems together with the students and have them practice until they have the strategy down. I have been working for a local High School for 3 years now as an instructional assistant. Currently I have 3 math classes. I have 2 pre-algebra classes and one geometry. I basically help students mostly 1:6. I have 8 math students that I work with. This summer I also thought math for the students that have failed classes or that were skipping classes and needed to make up the credit. I have BA in English/American Literature. I believe that every student learns differently. I enjoy working one-on-one with students to give them an explanation that is meaningful to them. I also try to present new material in a way that is tailored to the learning style of the student. I continually check for understanding during lessons. Above all, I try to be positive! As a graduate of The Kings College the professors taught me the value of working with children on an individual basis. They taught me that there are many different learning styles a student may have. This is what got me interested in the Title 1 Program. As a tutor in this program my focus was Reading and Math at the elementary level.
