If someone would pay me to be a student, I could continue going to school for my whole life. I love to learn and come from a family of teachers. My award for service learning integrated information from the fields of Education and Sociology to improve learning opportunities for abused children. I have extensive experience writing and editing through professional training (BA in Journalism) and experience (various editing projects). I participated in mentoring projects in my undergrad experience. I co-presented a workshop on Adult Learning Styles at an AmeriCorps conference.
With my years of being around and in an educational environment, I have picked up patterns of repetition and summary to reinforce ideas being conveyed. I, myself, learn best by doing. Through studying adult learning styles, I discovered that studies show utilizing all facets of learning - writing, audio, visual, ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My teaching style is enthusiastic; I desire to help students encounter who they are and imagine what they can achieve through their education. As an educator, I am energetic, compassionate and flexible in my approach to student needs. I understand my role as an engaged fellow learner, rather than a reserved teacher-authority. Because I believe that learning is a dynamic, uneven process and this process is often different for every person, my teaching philosophy is student-centered. I strive to create a conversational, open space where students feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes. I celebrate the significant, unique inquiry each student brings into the classroom. In one-on-one conferences, I encourage self-reflection, asking students to identify questions or difficulties we can explore together. I challenge students to be self-accountable, even as I hold students accountable ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am passionate about teaching and learning, and I love all people. I am an advocate of task-based learning, multiple intelligences, and the all-around inductive/constructivist approach to learning. I am a firm believer in the idea that all people have the same innate capacity to learn, but that this is manifested in different ways. This is particularly important because I beleive a good teacher should be able to discover the individual and specific ways that a student relates or acquires information best (visually, aurally, kinesthetically etc.) and can then take that information and develop appropriate excercises and teaching materials to help maximize that student's learning experience. Different teaching styles are needed for different learning styles, and I will accomodate as necessary.
My goal in studying linguistics is to become a professional ESL teacher. I am very much in ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy helping others and have often volunteered my proofreading and editing skills to my friends, family, and classmates. While in college, I took numerous creative writing classes that utilized workshop and group editing techniques. As a result, I have learned how to give constructive criticism and how to help others improve their writing without compromising their own unique style and voice. As a writer myself, I understand literary theory and technique, as well as the importance (and many facets) of authorship, which I try to pass along to my students through excercises and activities.
I have a Bachelor's degree in English Writing from the University of Nevada, Reno, and am currently in the process of applying to graduate school for Creative Writing. During the past year, I have tutored part-time as a writing tutor through the in-home tutoring company Study Buddies. R ... read more
