PhD Physics, able to tutor in science, math, engineering

I was a senior scientist - engineer for 37 years. I retired to care for my comatose wife at home, and she died a few months later. This situation has left me open to new directions. My teaching experience has been 3 years as a graduate teaching assistant, and 2 years as a tutor to friends and family in science and mathematics. My goal is to show how math and science can enrich one's life and these subjects are nothing to fear.
I follow the method of G. Polya in his classic work "How to Solve It". By asking the right questions, one can help the student define his problem, form a plan for the solution, carry out the plan, and examine the result. I also try to work as many difficult problems from the student's text as time permits, in order to show that all problems have a solution, and the student can build confidence in attacking any problem. I try to present the material in ... read more

Chemistry is one of my top subjects!

I received my Bachelor of Science from Western Washington University and my Master of Science from the University of Oregon, both in chemistry. After graduation, I worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a synthetic chemist before starting a PhD program. While I ultimately decided not to complete my doctorate, I did discover I had quite a passion for teaching chemistry. I then started teaching test prep courses and tutoring students, and later I started teaching general and organic chemistry as an adjunct professor in the Seattle Colleges District which I have been doing for the past 3 years.
Tutoring especially appeals to me because breakthrough moments don’t always occur while class is in session. Every student has a slightly different way of wrapping his or her head around a given concept. By engaging students one-on-one, I can get a feel for their specific situation and how th ... read more

My comments on tutoring Chemistry : My undergraduate, masters degrees were in Chemistry. I have taken many advanced level courses in Chemistry

I have overall 10 years of teaching experience. I came to United States to do my Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry. As a graduate student, I worked as a TA for the Department of Chemistry. I was trained on an intense 4 week program focused on undergraduate teaching methods offered by the Teaching College of U of Nebraska. I taught various undergraduate courses (both laboratory and recitation) at the Department of Chemistry, UNL. I have been living in Seattle for the past four years, and I have tutored students from high school, U Prep, and College in Science and Math. I teach all subdivisions of Chemistry (College and high-school) level, mathematics and physics (highschool). I also tutor for GRE Chemistry and Biochemistry subject exams.
I am a passionate and patient teacher. It gives me a great satisfaction to make students understand the concepts and my real reward is through seeing the ... read more

I have been teaching Biology 1100 for undergraduate offered by Idaho State University for past 2.5 years. Being a biology major i enjoy teaching biology and help student understanding basic foundation of science. Understanding is a part of learning where most of the student struggle. Science would be so much fun if we stick with the basic. Beside biology i have helped students with maths, physics and chemistry which without any doubt is an integral part of science. Being a recent graduate student i have learned the way how to tackle with problems and have successfully employed those problem solving techniques in my teaching carrier.contact me 2085402785 or email: [email protected]

I try to avoid giving students an answer immediately, but rather try to pry the answer out of them with questions so that they can figure out the answer themselves. I see teaching as helping/forcing the student to think things out and make discoveries for themselves, not just being spoon-fed information. Of course, sometimes it is necessary to tell students the answer if all else fails (after all, it is important that learning is not a frustrating activity for the student), and rote memorization can be a valuable tool every now and then. Above all else, I would describe my style as being patient and trying to allow the student to have fun and be interested in the topic under study.

I enjoy tutoring students of all ages. When a student reaches the moment of understanding and a smile comes across his or her face, my heart is filled with a certain level of satisfaction that is indescribable. My hope is to facilitate this process of understanding the best that I can. Thus, my teaching style is relatively lax and often humorous in nature in order to mitigate any intimidation that may accompany learning. I try different approaches to explain a concept, often referring to common everyday examples to simplify more technical ideas. I understand that not every student learns in the same manner or at the same rate, so I will cater my teaching style to the individual student.

A Little Bit About Me...

Being the first college graduate for a portion of my family, I feel that the need to excel is extremely important. I earned my BS in chemistry, a 132 hour program, in four years. Working as a TA I felt I could directly help students reach their goals by giving them additional tools to learn with. Since being a TA, I have worked in a laboratory and have been relied upon to convey technical data to non-technical people, helping translate concepts and ideas into everyday language.
I enjoyed teaching during my tenure as a TA. In addition, through college I was able to participate in educational outreaches to elementary and junior high students showing them that chemistry does have a great significance in their lives. As a teacher, I really want to show the students through the basic concepts and really allow the student to help use those concepts to explore more difficult situatio ... read more

In the past I have worked with students both one and one and within a group setting, and feel comfortable adapting to any particular group or individual's needs. I believe effective teachers must compose a delicate balance of meticulous discipline and natural concern. The best teachers and professors of my academic career were not only intelligent, but carried a contagious passion for what they studied. I would like to think my teaching style is the same.
In college I volunteer tutored at the Crawford Country READ center to a pupil struggling with reading comprehension, writing and mathematics. Through out my academic career I have faced many challenges, and many times have had to turn to tutors and peers for help, as a result I am familiar with the dilemmas children can face. Through my experience with children, I believe that all children find success if the material is presented in a manner that suites them. As a result I believe in trying many different ways to share my knowledge, I can help a child succeed in academically. Because each child learns differently, and faces different challenges and strengths, I value patience and perseverance in my interactions with them. I work towards helping each child see their success and become better people.

I am a graduate from Occidental College in Los Angeles. A Little Bit About Me...

As a future medical student, I have completed extensive coursework in math and the sciences. With a Bachelor's degree in nutrition, I have a firm grasp on biology, chemistry, anatomy, and am fascinated by interconnectedness of those subjects with relation to the human body. I delight in helping students find things that they love about those subjects and sparking their curiosity. During my two years spent tutoring, I have enthusiastically brought dozens of students to those "A-ha!" moments, and shared with them my tricks of the trade for success in math and science.
I believe that an empowered student can accomplish anything with proper guidance. By building their confidence in the subject matter and ensuring that their study time is constructive, I can help set students up for success come test day.
