Chemistry is one of my top subjects!

I received my Bachelor of Science from Western Washington University and my Master of Science from the University of Oregon, both in chemistry. After graduation, I worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a synthetic chemist before starting a PhD program. While I ultimately decided not to complete my doctorate, I did discover I had quite a passion for teaching chemistry. I then started teaching test prep courses and tutoring students, and later I started teaching general and organic chemistry as an adjunct professor in the Seattle Colleges District which I have been doing for the past 3 years.

I have been teaching Biology 1100 for undergraduate offered by Idaho State University for past 2.5 years. I was a senior scientist - engineer for 37 years. I retired to care for my comatose wife at home, and she died a few months later. This situation has left me open to new directions. For organic students, I prefer to teach how to think about the chemistry involved in any given reaction. I emphasize an awareness of electron density – where the electrons are in a molecule – and how electron rich areas want to bind to electron poor areas. The goal is to give the students an understanding of the physical reasons reactions occur, and how a series of reactions can be used to accomplish a synthesis.
