My "ace in the hole" in teaching is the fact that I care for students and they know it. I do make it well known that I am there to teach; not be their friend (or their parent!). Students of all ages are welcomed in my world...from beginners to the senior citizen who wants to learn more. I strive to make the learning fun and exciting by finding what works for the student as an individual. They are not all alike and because of this, I find that "cookie cutter" style teaching doesn't work. If something doesn't work one way, I try to find another way to achieve the same goal. Rather than my playing a new piece for the student, I ask that the student TRY it themselves first....breaking it down into small pieces so that it doesn't overwhelm them at first run through. A wise man once said; to learn, read; to know, write. But to master, teach. Teach is one of those nifty reflexive verbs where the teacher and pupil are interchangeable. If both are patient, resourceful, imaginative and caring the learning becomes less process and more flow. This is always my goal in teaching: creating a positive and flexible environment for all the principles involved. And of course, frequently there must be laughter. I hold a BS degree in Mathematics from Salisbury University, where I regularly tutored my peers in various math subjects, physics, and chemistry. I also studied Spanish, with which I can still carry a basic conversation. I also taught English to Spanish-speaking immigrants through the Worcester County Board of Education for about 6 months. I love to see a person understand something they have been trying so hard to understand. I know that all people are going to learn differently and that I have to determine how a particular person learns.
