At our first session, I ask that each student complete a short quiz to determine their learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc). Every child learns differently and I believe that discovering what works best for each student is the first step towards success. Once we figure out what his/her learning style is, I cater to this. If they learn best by reading, I'll prepare worksheets based on what they're learning; if they're hands-on learners, I'll make an activity.
My experience with tutoring began in high school, when I started assisting elementary students with homework through one of my clubs. I will be having you do questions and answers and explain the concepts and techniques involved with breaking down each question this way if its a lack in knowledge of the concept i will be able to identify and explain if its a lack in technique to understand the question and know what its asking and how to answer it then I will be able to identify that and explain it. I have found this to be the most effective and efficient way. I believe that “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink,” but if it won’t drink, try putting salt in its oats. Everyone can learn, but to do any significant amount of learning they need to choose to do so. As an educator I can work with students to try and make the material such that they desire to learn about it. I find this easiest to do in a small group tutoring session, because you can see how the students are thinking and can cater towards how they learn best. In a large group it is a little harder to personalize a lesson or a project, but to a degree the class can be read and its particular struggles addressed. Learning requires work, and good teachers can motivate students to want to work for their education, and make that work manageable for them.

I recalled my difficulties in learning difficult subjects, my difficulties are not universal but I draw from them in finding what is blocking the student from grasping certain concepts. I recall teaching my children at a very early age the concept of ratios. I used windows, tiles from the kitchen, a pizza pie etc. This, before going to pencil and paper and it worked.
