My comments on tutoring Reading : I have a BA in English

While in College I was a part time nanny for a single Mom with twins. I started taking care of the twins when they were 2 and continued until they were almost 4. I was an assistant teacher part time at little playmates preschool daycare. During my time there I worked with the 2 and 3 year old class and the 4 and 5 year old class. My comments on tutoring Reading : I am an avid reader with a collection of over 300 books, but learning to teach reading was not easy for me! I worked hard at becoming proficient in helping students pick up on key themes and information, while still enjoying the story overall.

I have years of experience in varying forms of educations, but my most relevant is the two years (2012-2014) I lived in South Korea, teaching elementary and middle school students in English as a foreign language at a private academy. During that time period, I also tutored two adults in conversation, vocabulary, and diction. This experience led me to the decision to pursue a Masters in teaching, and until I complete that goal, I am going to keep my skills fresh with tutoring.
I prefer a very conversational approach with my students. The style encourages mutual respect and allows me to observe more closely how the student learns. In addition, I feel learning is absorbed better when the information is couched in a story, and I believe conversation is a style of storytelling.

I am structured yet kind. Kids need to feel a connection to their teacher in order to give 100%. I work a great deal on building community in my classroom and allowing kids to appreciate the diversity among themselves. Not all kids are going to excel in all areas. They need to value what they are really good at and share that with their peers. This also creates miniature "experts" which makes all kids feel good. Once a child feels successful; in one area it encourages them to tackle something they are less comfortable with.
