American Sign Language Tutor

I believe that it is best for the student to let me know what needs they have in order for me to help them become more fluent in sign language. Once we have accessed your skills, then we can move on to improve them. I can go through vocabulary with the student. I can give the students signed as well as written tests. I am also willing to accompany the student to deaf socials where they can practice their sign language skills with deaf persons.
I have taken all the sign language courses at Modesto Junior College (these classes are of the same curriculum as Stanislaus State). I received an "A" on all of my coursework. I then was asked by the sign language instructor at MJC to become her teaching assistant. I was in charge of teaching on my own when the instructor was called away to business. I instructed the students under the direction of the instructor. I tutored the stud ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I believe that students can reach their potential if they are given the tools that they need. My job is to be the toolbox for them. As a special education teacher, I adapt my teaching style to meet the needs of the students. I believe that a child should be given a vast amount of positive reinforcement and always be spoken to and taught with respect. I also believe children need boundaries set that will consistently be reinforced. Our job is to teach them those boundaries but to do so with compassion. It truly makes my day, when I see a student that finally "gets" what we are discussing or learning. Teaching is a great joy for me.
I graduated with honors from MacMurray College, majoring in Deaf/Hard of Hearing Teacher Education. I gained certification through the State of Illinois and through ACSI. I have served in the educational setting for over 11 years. I have a vast backgroun ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught for twenty five years at the middle school level mostly in a self contained sixth grade classroom. In addition to teaching reading, English, math, science, and social studies, I taught electives is video filming and remedial reading. In my experience as a teacher, I discovered that all students can learn if they are properly motivated. I found that I could best motivate a student if I found what they were interested in, and what grade level they were working at. I also worked for five years as a substitute teacher.
I believe in individualized teaching. In my sixth grade classroom, I individualized instruction wherever possible. In reading I tested my students and placed them in books at their reading level. I had them write reading summaries and corrected their first drafts. In sixth weeks, I retested and in most instances moved students to a higher level. In my ma ... read more
